How to use the sales tax calculator
The math is two lines: total = subtotal × (1 + rate), and subtotal = total ÷ (1 + rate). The hard part is remembering which is which when you are staring at a receipt.
- Pick the mode that matches what you know.
- Type the subtotal or total, plus the tax rate as a percent. Enter the rate exactly — for a 7.25% sales tax type 7.25, not 0.0725.
- Read the tax amount and the missing side. If you are reverse-engineering a receipt and your rate is wrong, the pre-tax price will not match the line-item subtotal on the receipt — adjust the rate and try again.
Tax rates vary
US sales tax is state and local: anywhere from 0% (Oregon, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire) up past 10% in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama once local add-ons are included. The UK uses 20% VAT on most goods and services. Canada stacks federal GST (5%) with provincial PST/HST. Always check the rate for your city and category — groceries and medicine are often exempt or reduced.
